Deja Vu LSU vs Grambling

Deja Vu LSU vs Grambling
Two sets of Tigers made history Saturday night in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. LSU and Grambling State University met for the first time in the existence of their historic football programs. Both teams entered week two 0-1 and hoping to right the ship. Grambling losing to Hampton 35-31 and LSU getting embarrassed by Florida State 45-24.
For the LSU Tigers football team and fans it’s the second year in a row they’re waking up Saturday morning of week two ready to make history by hosting a Louisiana HBCU (Historically Black College and University) football program. For the Tigers of LSU it was Deja Vu all over again.
In 2022, LSU entered their week two contest ready to make history no matter the outcome. The Tigers were 0-1 after a loss to Florida State but were ready to right the ship in their history making game. What history were the 2022 Tigers making in their second but first home game of the year? LSU was hosting their Baton Rouge neighbor Southern University. In fact, Southern was making history as well. The Jaguars became the first Louisiana HBCU (Historical Black College and University) to play in Tiger Stadium.
It’s hard to believe that neither Southern nor Grambling Football teams had ever played a game against LSU. LSU has played all but one instate university. Athletic Director Skip Bertman had the idea of LSU hosting all of Louisiana’s instate colleges that play FBS & FCS football. An idea that benefits all Louisiana schools and athletic departments by limiting their travel and keeping Louisiana money in the state. If LSU was going to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to play a game, why not pay a Louisiana university or college?
LSU and Grambling State programs and fan bases are used to seeing championship caliber teams on the field. The Grambling Tigers have won 15 Black College National Championships. LSU has four FBS National Championships. Although the games between LSU and Southern in 2022 and Grambling State in 2023 were scheduled years ago, LSU head coach Brian Kelly is glad to have been the man in charge of the program as history is made.
LSU will complete the cycle of playing every Louisiana College and/or University when the Tigers host Nicholls State 2025.
If you’re keeping track, LSU has now played Centenary (1895/1933), Grambling St, La. Tech, ULM, NSU, Louisiana College (1928 & 29) McNeese, USL/ULL, Southern, Loyola NOLA (1922/1939), Tulane, Southeastern LA..
Football between LSU, Southern and Grambling State is not the only battle in Tiger Stadium that Tiger fans have been missing out on all these years. The halftime battle of the bands has probably been more impressive if not more competitive.
